Kareena Kapoor is yet another K-family girl who took the plunge and managed to
make a huge splash in the Hindi films industry. She had the privilege of
debuting with the Bachchan boy -Abhishek in Refugee and though the film (and
Abhishek) didn't do as well as expected, Kareena earned rave reviews.
Never in the history of films has a star sibling risen to a status of a mega
star in a short period of time as has Kareena Kapoor. Even as a 10-year-old,
when Beboo (as she’s fondly called) tried on wigs and new shades of lipsticks in
her sister Karisma’s make-up room, everyone knew that she would eventually join
movies. But even her mother Babita, who has an iron hand over her daughters,
could not foretell the extent of her success.
The first unconventional step she took was by signing Refugee immediately after
rejecting Rakesh Roshan’s Kaho Naa Pyar Hai. Minor differences led to her
walking out of the project, and wisely so, since the film did nothing for its
heroine Amisha Patel. Refugee was a perfect launch for Kareena, who with her
ethereal looks managed to carve a niche for herself as a performing actress as
opposed to a glamour doll.
The film did not do well but she was noticed. She had done Yaadein in opposite
Hrithik, and Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Gham, Ashoka opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Mujhe Kuch
Khena Hai opposite Tusshar Kapoor, then she has Sooraj Barjatya’s film, a love
triangle with both Hrithik and Abhishek Bachchan. In 2003 Kareena's Chameli
released in which her performance is being noticed. She got Stardust special
award for Chameli.
Forcoming releases are with Dharmesh Darshan's Bewafaa and Priyadarshan's
Hulchul.
