Raveena dropped out of Bombay's Meethibai College to pursue a career as a model
with middling success. She made her movie debut with the flop Pathar Ke Phool
(1991) for which she bagged "Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut" in 1991. Her
next few films were also failures and it was only with Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
that she tasted success. Mohra (1994) made her a superstar all set to become
Bollywood's reigning actress. However she then began a tangled affair with
co-star Akshay Kumar. By the end of 1995 her career was in tatters and she was
reduced to the level of a starlet doing bit roles. Her career revived with a
huge hit Ziddi (1997) and she now is again a top rung star.
She has recently set up her own TV production unit RT Video. She was offered
Rani Mukherjee's role in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and was offered Karishma Kapoor's
role in Dil To Pagal Hai. Raveena Tandon has a perfume named after her marketed
by a Swiss firm: it was first marketed in Dubai, UAE in 1996.
n her films, Ravs appears as a glamor gal as most of the roles she's given
require her to be rather than a performance-based one for she stands as a
synonym for the very word 'glamor'. She just enjoyed these roles in the initial
stages of her career but now she's become so choosy about the kind of roles she
wants to take up, play and perform and she's more inclined to the roles which
are performance-oriented because she wants to put in a lot of effort towards the
growth and development of her career as an artist than a mere glamor gal digging
out all of her hidden acting capabilities.
And right now Raves is going through this phase of filmi-life where she, having
been offered performance-oriented roles, is looking forward to making a name for
herself in Bollywood. Her future projects include Dobara and Ek Se Badkar Ek.
Considering her commitment towards social work, one wonders if she will do a
film on a social issue. To that, Raveena replies that she will - but only with a
very good director and cameraman. That said, the actress is also very vocal
about her views on child labour and children begging on the streets. It saddens
her to see that adults can actually bring children into this world and then not
be responsible for their upbringing and education. It is difficult to imagine
that the socially responsible, mature, intelligent woman in front of you as the
sweet young thing you saw in a typical Bollywood film. But it is. Bollywood
actresses are not bimbos in real life - Raveena is living proof of that.
